Hey everyone! I'm a young IT specialist working for a large company and it's been quite a ride. I'm currently in my fourth week, and while the tech work isn't too challenging, the workplace dynamics are incredibly tough. My managers are scattered across different states, and I'm in a busy area filled with noise and interruptions. I've also been required to have work apps on my personal phone, which is causing me a lot of anxiety. I've already felt sick from the stress and not taking care of myself. I'm lucky to have this job, but I really need help figuring out how to deal with the difficult people, manage the overwhelming stress, and not let it ruin my love for IT. Any suggestions on coping mechanisms that don't involve substances? And how long should I stick it out before looking for another job?

Honestly, if you feel like you're drowning, it's okay to reconsider if this job is really for you. Don't let your health suffer for a company. Also, look for hobbies or activities that can take your mind off of work. You gotta create a balance. And hey, when it comes to staying in this field, it might help to step away for a while—breathe and remember why you loved IT to begin with.
I’d suggest talking to your employer about providing you with a work phone for notifications. It’s not cool that you’re using your personal device for work-related stuff. As for dealing with difficult personalities, try to remember that it’s not personal—document everything that happens, so you have it for reference later. And sometimes, you just have to let things go and not take every fire drill so seriously. Focus on your own well-being first.
Good call on demanding a work phone. I’m definitely going to bring that up during my meetings next week. The documentation tip is golden, too. I’ll make sure to stay on top of that!
First off, don’t be afraid to set some hard boundaries. Make it clear that once you're off the clock, you're off the clock. Get some personal time back! Also, lock in some breaks during the day so you can recharge—those are important. And if things keep piling up, don’t hesitate to remind your manager that there are limits to what one person can handle. You’re not a superhero!
I appreciate that! I'm going to enforce my lunch breaks and make sure I step away from the screen. I think setting time limits will also help keep my sanity.
My gut says you should look for something else. It's clear that this isn't a healthy environment for you, and if it's stressing you out this much already, it's probably not worth it. You deserve a place where you can learn and grow without feeling overwhelmed all the time!
I totally get that, but I'm also hesitant to jump ship without a backup plan. I come from a background in low voltage, so there's work out there, but I just want to give it a solid week to see if anything improves.

Totally! I need a breather and to find a hobby outside of work. I'll also try to disconnect completely during my downtime!
