What Are the Best Open-Source Monitoring Solutions for Windows and Linux?

Hey everyone! I'm on the lookout for a good observability tool for monitoring both Linux and Windows servers. I'm seeking something that's not overly complicated to get started with, unlike Zabbix. Previously, I used PRTG, which was great for monitoring Windows via WMI and Linux through SNMP, but now that my needs have grown, I need to find a more robust solution since the free version of PRTG isn't cutting it anymore. I've been testing Checkmk (which is paid) and also tried Prometheus, but the devs aren't responsive about adding logging support to integrate Loki, which is frustrating. Currently, I don't have Kubernetes setups and only a few containers, so I'd love to hear your suggestions!

Checkmk could be a great alternative for your monitoring needs. I've seen it work well for various setups.

Zabbix really does get easier once you get through the initial learning phase. If you choose something simpler, you might find yourself wishing you had picked Zabbix in a few months.

Have you checked out OpenSearch? It's a solid option for monitoring across Linux, Unix, and Windows systems. Just make sure that when you set it up, you’re using TLS or secure methods for data transmission, and avoid keeping any monitoring ports open to the internet! They also support SNMP v3 for your network devices.

What about OpenITCockpit? I've heard good things about it as a straightforward monitoring tool.

Honestly, if you're avoiding Zabbix, you're probably missing out. I switched over from PRTG, and my team really wishes we had adopted Zabbix sooner. It's not as complex as it seems; you just need some time to get familiar with it. You can end up monitoring nearly everything you need with it.
