I'm not hitting the frame rates I expected with my current GPU and processor setup. Could my RAM speed be the issue? I recently ran a benchmark test on my Intel Core i5-12600K processor, and it didn't perform well compared to similar processors. I'm hoping for a steady 140+ frames in games like Overwatch since I have a 144 Hz monitor. Here are my specs:
- Processor: Intel Core i5-12600K
- GPU: NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 4070 Super
- RAM: Two sticks of Corsair 8 GB at 2400 MHz
I usually get around 100-140 fps in Overwatch, about 90 fps in Deadzone Rogue, and like 60-90 fps in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. Any help would be appreciated!

Your RAM at 2400 MHz is pretty outdated. It’s much slower compared to newer DDR5 options, which is likely affecting your benchmark scores as well. Upgrading to faster RAM could help improve your performance significantly.
It sounds like thermal throttling could be affecting your CPU performance. I had issues with my i7 11700K because of poor airflow, which caused it to slow down. Also, your RAM speed at 2400 MHz is quite low for modern standards, and that could definitely impact your frame rates too. You should consider checking your cooling system and seeing if your CPU is overheating.
Totally agree! Many people overlook thermal throttling. I switched coolers for just $10, and it drastically improved my performance in games.
How can I check if my CPU is thermal throttling or see the MHz it's currently running?
Are you gaming at 1080p or 1440p? You should really be getting frame rates in the hundreds for shooters at 1080p.
I thought so too! I'm only on 1080p though, which is weird.
I recommend checking the Task Manager during your gaming sessions. Look under the performance tab to monitor your CPU and RAM usage. You’ve got a solid CPU and GPU, but it seems like your RAM is holding you back. Also, remember to adjust your game settings. I had a big change in frames by optimizing my graphics settings. Just make sure you don't have too many background applications running.
Thanks! I'll check the Task Manager when I'm back at my computer. I'm playing on the lowest settings but still struggling with frames.

That makes total sense! It's no wonder my benchmarks were low, given that they often compare to systems with DDR5.
