Hey everyone! I'm planning to upgrade my PC, but I could really use some help with picking out a new CPU and motherboard since my knowledge about hardware compatibility has kinda faded over the years. I'm moving from a 1080p setup to a 1440p, 144Hz+ display and I'm mainly looking for a budget-friendly upgrade that can handle modern games without needing to run everything on max settings.
Here are my current specs:
- Motherboard: B360M-D3H
- CPU: i7-8700
- GPU: GTX 1080 (though I just ordered an RX 9070)
- Power Supply: 750W (pretty sure it's a Corsair)
- Storage: 1TB Kingston NV2 M.2 SSD (I might need advice on upgrading this as well)
- RAM: 2x8GB DDR4 from Fury Beast (1 stick is actually HyperX, but they're similar since Kingston sold the brand). Upgrading RAM isn't on my list right now since prices went up.
Thanks for your help!

For your upgrade, I’d recommend looking into the Intel 12-14 series CPUs or the AMD 5 series. They should give you a good performance boost without breaking the bank. As for the motherboard, check for compatibility with the CPU you choose, since that might require a new board depending on your pick.
Just curious, where are you based? I see you mentioned a budget, I think knowing your location could really help with finding the best options available to you!
If you’re on a budget, you might not need to change your motherboard unless you opt for a newer generation CPU. Just ensure your new CPU is compatible with your existing slot, and keep an eye on the power requirements.
