Why has my old PC stopped running games smoothly?

I've got two computers: an older one that's over 6 years old and a newer one that's about 3 years old. The old PC used to run games like GTA 5 and Minecraft just fine, but ever since I moved in with my boyfriend and upgraded our internet to 600mbps, the old PC has been struggling to run almost any games at all. It can barely handle Roblox now, and I can't even get Counter-Strike to open without crashing. I've tried everything to fix it, including connecting it directly to the router and checking my internet speed, which is good, but the gaming performance is still terrible. It's still running Windows 10 because it can't upgrade to Windows 11. Any advice on how to get it gaming again? My boyfriend really wants to use it since he can't afford his own PC, plus my dad has some parts saved for him to build one eventually. I can get more details about the old PC if anyone needs them!

It sounds like your old PC could be running into some performance issues. Since you mentioned that only the Ethernet cable changed, it might not be the sole reason for the lag. Check if the monitor is connected to the GPU instead of the motherboard, as using the wrong connection can sometimes lead to performance drops. Also, did it start lagging out of nowhere? That's a big clue! You might want to perform a reset to see if that clears any potential issues.

Since you mentioned that the PC worked fine before, I’d check the internal hardware too. Ask your dad about the specs inside—things like the GPU and RAM. If the hardware is outdated or failing, that might lead to a massive drop in performance. It might also be worth uninstalling any bloatware that could be using up resources.

There’s a chance that your PC could have picked up some malware, especially if it’s behaving oddly out of the blue. I’d recommend running a complete scan using a good antivirus program like BitDefender or Malwarebytes. Also, make sure Windows is fully updated; sometimes, system updates can solve underlying issues. Clean up any unnecessary software and try doing a clean boot to see if it helps the gaming situation.
