Best Practices for Migrating User Drives to OneDrive

We're in the midst of migrating user 'Home' drives to OneDrive, but it's been a bumpy ride with major scaling and reliability issues. Some of our users have over 90,000 files and datasets that exceed 80GB, often with complicated, lengthy directory paths. We're testing out tools like ShareGate, but they haven't provided consistent results. Initially, we see a lot of errors, and even though later passes seem to clear things up, the data totals don't match up, raising concerns about the integrity of our data. Plus, the migration process is currently limited to one user at a time, which is really not viable for our 1,000-user setup. I'm curious about how other organizations are managing similar migrations at scale. Are there better tools or configurations for high-volume, multi-threaded migrations? We're also planning to try out SharePoint Migration Manager to see if it helps.

I've had some success with Microsoft's SharePoint Migration Tool for OneDrive migrations. Though, it's not the best experience since you need to import a spreadsheet listing source and destination paths manually. It does allow you to run a pre-migration assessment, which helps identify issues ahead of time.

It sounds like you have a challenging migration ahead! High file counts and long paths can complicate things, especially with folders nested deeper than six levels. It's crucial to rethink your structure since OneDrive and SharePoint differ greatly from standard file shares. Are you facing a tight deadline? That could complicate the transition.

I've been in your shoes with 66,000+ users. We also utilized Sharegate, and while we did experience minor data loss, it wasn't significant enough to cause concern. We communicated the risks upfront and encouraged users to back up their files just in case.

The first thing to note is that a direct migration isn't always the best approach, especially if you're moving complex setups. My organization uses Avepoint Fly server, which offers filtering options. It might be worth checking out to avoid migrating unnecessary files like EXEs or media. Have you done a data analysis? You might be able to just focus on essential document types, which could keep things cleaner during migration.

Why do individual users have so much data? This definitely feels like a data governance issue. It’s important to clean up—and possibly restrict—data ownership to prevent these kinds of problems in the future.
