I had to return my 4090 because it kept crashing during games when I pushed the graphics to maximum settings. I don't plan to run max settings for every game, but I'm thinking about getting a 5060 Ti 16GB as a backup. Is it a decent card to hold me over until I get my 4090 back?

Yeah, the 5060 Ti is a reliable GPU. It should do the job for you!
I actually use the 5060 Ti as my main card, and it does just fine.
Make sure to compare how the 5060 Ti performs for your specific needs against your experience with the 4090.
The 5060 Ti is definitely a solid card. It's not the most powerful option out there, but it should serve you well as a placeholder. Just surprised you're going for that when there are cheaper alternatives, like the 3060.
That's quite an expensive placeholder you're thinking about! Does your CPU have integrated graphics?

Even if it does, what will you really be playing? Just the basics?
