Hey everyone! I've got a pretty old PC that's around 8 years old, and it's not posting. It's got Windows 10, an Intel 7th Gen processor (a 7700k), 8GB of RAM in dual channel mode (but only two DIMM slots), and a combo of a SATA SSD and a hard drive. There's no dedicated GPU; it's using integrated graphics only.
When I hit the power button, the CPU fan starts spinning, but there's no display output, and it stays powered on until I manually turn it off. Interestingly, the case fan doesn't spin at all, and I tried swapping in another known good case fan, but that didn't help. The power button does work for turning the PC on, but holding it down won't turn it off like it should.
I've already swapped CPUs (and reapplied thermal paste), tried each RAM stick individually in different slots, and cleared the CMOS battery, but nothing seems to work. I also tested with a different monitor and cable, just in case.
Given the case fan not spinning and the power button issues, I'm leaning towards a motherboard problem, but I'm not completely sure. How can I test the motherboard? I don't have a spare to swap in. Any thoughts? Could it be a dead CMOS battery? Thanks! ❤️

It’s tricky to diagnose. It could be a failing PSU, motherboard, or your CPU's integrated graphics. If you have another computer, test the GPU there just to rule that out quickly!
I recommend unplugging all the case fans and front header connections from the motherboard. Then, try booting by jumping the power pins directly on the motherboard. I had a similar issue where one of my case fans had a short circuit, causing inconsistent booting and power issues. It might help narrow down the problem!
Replacing the CMOS battery might be worth it. It's a cheap fix and doesn't hurt to try!

I'll give that a shot! Fingers crossed it works!
