I've recently pulled out my old laptop and it's been really sluggish. Even launching something as simple as a web browser takes about 10 minutes. After some research, I decided to install Linux Mint which improved things a bit, but I'm still stuck with browsers taking around 2 minutes to open and everything else feels choppy. It's my only option right now because my main laptop is in for repairs, and simple tasks are turning into half-hour struggles. I've come across some threads suggesting that my hard drive might be failing, but it seems to work fine for basic file transfers and was a little choppy even during the Linux install. My laptop has 8 GB of RAM and an Intel i5 6200u CPU, plus an AMD Radeon 2GB GPU with a 1TB HDD running Linux Mint. I'm looking for any tips or solutions to speed this up. Thanks!

You might want to look into swapping your HDD for an SSD. That change alone can significantly speed up your laptop. Also, consider upgrading your RAM; doubling it could really help with performance. It's investment-heavy, I know, but it'll make a world of difference!
And seriously, double-check your RAM situation. My old laptop had a tough time too until I finally upgraded, and it made a big difference compared to what I expected.

I hear you on the prices! If you're on a tight budget, there are some HDDs with better writing speeds that might be worthwhile, but just know that SSDs generally offer the best performance.
