Is a 500W Power Supply Enough for My B580 Build?

I recently scored a B580 at a great price, but I'm concerned about my current power supply. It's only 500W, and I've heard mixed advice about whether that's safe. I'm running an Intel i5 14400F CPU; ChatGPT mentioned it might be risky. What do you all think?

The enough power depends largely on your entire system's wattage, mostly driven by the CPU and GPU. A good rule is to have a power supply that can handle around double the thermal design power (TDP) of your CPU and GPU combined, just to be safe. Without knowing everything in your build, it’s hard to say definitively, but your setup should be okay if you keep things lightweight.

Exactly! Just make sure everything's in good condition, and check how efficient your PSU actually is. It needs to deliver its rated wattage reliably.

Honestly, I wouldn’t risk it. A 750W or even a 650W unit is pretty affordable now and will give you better headroom for upgrades down the line. You'll feel much safer with a bit more wattage, especially if you plan on adding more components later.

Totally agree! It's worth the peace of mind. Plus, they often run more efficiently at lower loads, so you'll save some energy too.

What model of power supply do you have exactly? That makes a big difference. A 500W that's well-made can be okay, but if it’s a cheaper brand, you might want to consider upgrading soon.

You should be okay with a 500W PSU if your CPU only uses about 150W and your GPU around 200W. If you add in the rest of your components, you’re close to the limit, but you might want to undervolt your CPU just to be safe and avoid potential issues.

Yeah, but keep an eye on your power usage! If you notice any instability or crashes, it's probably time to look for something beefier.

Using a chatbot for PC advice? Interesting choice! But seriously, the PSU's quality matters a lot. If it's listed as 500W but only delivers around 450W on the 12V rail, you definitely shouldn't trust it. Snap a pic of the label and let us know what it says!

Good call! Checking the PSU quality is crucial. Sometimes they exaggerate the wattage; knowing the actual specs is super important.
