How Do I Start Building a PC?

I'm planning to build a PC since my all-in-one isn't performing well anymore, and even my Alienware X14 gaming laptop struggles with basic tasks like playing YouTube videos. I enjoy playing games like Sims 4, Roblox, and Minecraft Java, plus I do 3D modeling and printing, so I need a setup that can run those applications smoothly. I'm not very knowledgeable about CPU and RAM specifications, and I'm unsure whether to begin with basic components and upgrade later or invest in a high-end system from the start. Any tips would really help me out!

Start with setting a budget, define your goals for the build, and then pick your parts. Unfortunately, prices are quite high right now, making it hard to get the best components for your money.

You might want to look for pre-owned PCs on Marketplace for under $700, then upgrade them later. For your games, anything made post-2017 should run fine. I have a Ryzen 5 3600x with an RX 580, and it handles modded games without issues. Focus on 3D modeling requirements too; programs like FreeCAD are less GPU-dependent and need strong single-thread performance, while others like Blender might need better GPUs. Here’s a sample build you can consider: Intel i7/i9 or Ryzen 9, solid GPU, and at least 32GB of RAM with an NVMe SSD.

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend building a PC right now due to inflated prices on components like RAM and SSDs. If you are determined, start by assessing the specs of the games and software you plan to use, your budget, and your preferred resolution for gaming. After that, check out PCPartPicker for build inspiration and guidance.

The first step is to set a budget for your build. Once you have that down, focus on what kind of monitor you’ll be using, as that impacts your graphic card choice and how powerful a CPU you’ll need.

Absolutely! Also, consider whether you want a high refresh rate for gaming or something more standard for everyday use.

Before spending, try backing up your current system and do a fresh install of the OS. You might find your existing hardware is more capable once you clear out old files and programs that slow it down.
