I've encountered a peculiar issue with my MacBook after updating to Tahoe. Now, I'm noticing that I have two identical "mac" volumes showing up, both the same size. In the Disk Utility, I see one volume labeled "mac" and another labeled "Mac data." One of these volumes has normal data usage, while the other shows only 1MB. Even in Finder, I'm seeing duplicates where one volume is totally blank with some dummy user accounts. I thought my file search problems might be linked to these duplicates. After backing everything up to my Time Capsule, Spotlight seems to be working again. I'm wondering if I should go ahead and delete the "mac" volume and keep "Mac data," especially since some advice I received suggested doing this, albeit from a questionable source. I'm uncertain if that's a smart move. What do you think?

I totally get your concern! It's a good idea to validate what's really stored on those volumes before hitting delete. Since Spotlight is working now, you might want to check which files are actually being used. If one volume is genuinely empty, it may be safe to remove it, but always back up first, just in case!
It sounds like you might be dealing with those annoying ghost volumes that can pop up after updates. Since you’ve backed everything up already, it might be worth your while to check the actual space used on those volumes. Try moving a larger file from the suspicious volume to an external drive to see if it clears space. If the volumes are just symbolic links or mirror copies, deleting the wrong one could be risky! Better to double-check before making any deletions.
