Is Investing in an X3D CPU Worth It for Gaming?

I'm currently using a Ryzen 5 5500 and have been having quite a hard time with performance while playing CS2. I compete at a low tier, and it's nearly impossible to improve when my PC is lagging and experiencing fps drops. Right now, I have a GTX 1660 Ti and I'm considering upgrading to either a 5600X or a 5700X, or possibly spending an extra €300 on an X3D. While I know the X3D outperforms the other two, I'm interested in hearing from those with either a 5600X and a similar GPU about the performance in 4:3 and 1280x960 resolutions. I've read that it can hit between 150-180 fps with peaks around 250. Is that accurate, better, or worse? What do you think I should do? Thanks!

If you can find the 5500X3D, it’s the best bet for your configuration, especially if you're limited by budget. Just make sure your motherboard supports it!

Also, double-check that your motherboard supports that CPU. Most B550 boards should be fine, but some older models might not have updates available.

That's good advice; I had to check mine before upgrading!

What refresh rate is your monitor? I moved from a Ryzen 9 5900X to a 9800X3D and the jump has been tremendous. I have an RTX 3080 and now see 800+ fps in CS2, and it's much smoother!

I have a 165hz monitor, so those differences in frame rates make a noticeable impact during gameplay!

For sure! Every frame counts, especially in competitive gaming.

Definitely consider the 5500X3D. It's a solid upgrade, but both the 5600X and 5700X are good options too if you're looking for something with more cores. Just remember to set a budget!

I only have a max of €250, so the upgrades might be tricky!

The 5800X3D is also a great choice, it outperforms the 5500 version significantly.

I run a Ryzen 5 5600 with an RTX 5070, and at your resolution, I usually get around 485 FPS. I'm saving for AM5 myself, but it feels super smooth in-game!

Do you notice any drops in FPS, though? I don’t need 500fps; I’m aiming for a consistent 250 without dips!

Benchmarker -

My game feels solid with that setup, but I haven’t monitored FPS closely during matches.

Consider the 5500X3D for a decent upgrade, but upgrading your GPU to something like a 3070 would also significantly enhance your performance in CS2.

The 5700X or 5800X should definitely be enough for you. Just keep an eye out for upgrading your GPU sometime soon too!

I had a 5700X and 1660 Super combo and was consistently hitting about 250-300 FPS at high settings. It handled things pretty smoothly!

Actually, it sounds like there might be something off with your setup. The 5500 should handle CS2 pretty well if everything is optimized correctly.

I've tried everything already! Overclocking, underclocking, you name it. It just dips when I'm in the thick of a fight.

TweakMaster -

That's frustrating! It could be a CPU limitation in those intense moments.
