I'm looking to upgrade my computer's CPU as a first step before upgrading the GPU later on. I've been eyeing the new Ryzen 9000 series, particularly the 5 9600x and the 7 7800x3d, but I've also heard good things about the 7 9700x. My main focus is on gaming, and I'm interested in the best processors that would let me fully utilize a more powerful GPU down the line, like an RTX 4070 Super or better. Currently, I'm using an RTX 2060.

It really depends on your budget. The 9600x is pretty affordable and offers solid performance, but if you want something really good, the 7800x3d or 9800x3d are excellent options, but they do cost significantly more. You have to decide if you want decent performance or the best.
Just to add, when I say "good enough" with the 9600x, I'm talking about getting over 100fps on modern games, which is pretty solid. The 7800x3d will just give you smoother gameplay and better future-proofing.
Make sure your motherboard has an AM5 socket. Which CPU do you have right now?
I’ll be upgrading to AM5. Right now, I have a 5 3600x, and it's struggling with newer games like Oblivion Remastered.
If you're looking at options, here's a breakdown: For a budget, go for the Ryzen 5 9600x or the Ryzen 7 7700. If you're open to spending more, the 7800x3d or even the 9800x3d are great picks. As for GPUs, if you can snag a 9070XT for under $700, that's a solid deal! Otherwise, check out the previous-gen options like the 7800XT or 7900XT which are still really powerful.
It definitely comes down to your budget and what fits your motherboard. The 7800x3d is a fantastic choice for gaming but can be pricey and hard to find at a good price. If you're looking for something cheaper, the 7700x is also an excellent gaming CPU. I’d say consider the 9700x too, but only if there's not much price difference.
I don’t have a strict budget, but I’d rather not spend too much. By the way, I plan to game at 1440p.
