I'm planning to upgrade from my old i7 7700 to a Ryzen 5 5500, and I'm wondering if this is a sensible move. I have a B450 motherboard and 16GB of 3200MHz RAM. Would the 5500 be a better choice, or should I consider other options?

The 5500 will definitely be faster than the i7 7700, but it won't bring a massive performance boost. In fact, if you can find the 5600 for around $120, it's only $30 more, which would significantly enhance your gaming experience.
Yes, transitioning to the Ryzen 5 5500 is a reasonable upgrade since it puts you on a more current platform. However, you might not notice a big difference; it could be worth spending a bit more to get better performance with a 5600.
The 5500 is a solid choice for your upgrade — it's better than what you currently have; just keep in mind it's not going to blow you away. However, if you're pairing it with a 3060 12GB, you should see decent performance at 1080p.
The Ryzen 5 5500 is essentially a laptop chip and has half the L3 cache compared to the 5600, which makes it less ideal for gaming. I'd recommend waiting and saving up for the 5600 or 5600X if you can. They're much better options on AM4.
Your B450 board should be fine as long as it supports Zen 3. The 5500 might be a tad faster due to those extra cores, especially in CPU-limited games, but don't expect a massive upgrade.
I picked it up on Amazon a while back in a bundle. Just looking to upgrade now.
Sort of. In gaming, the difference might not be very noticeable, but for productivity tasks, those extra cores in the 5500 could be a nice benefit.

My budget is under $100, though. Is the 5500 at least better than the i7 7700?
