Can I Reuse a Corsair AX860i with an RTX 5080?

I'm trying to upgrade from an older AM4-era system to AM5 without replacing more parts than necessary. My current graphics card is a GTX 1080 Ti, but I'm considering an RTX 5080 for newer AAA games. Can my Corsair AX860i 860W 80 PLUS Platinum power supply handle it? I'm unsure about the differences between older ATX standards, ATX 3.0/3.1, and the newer 12V-2x6 connector. Is the AX860i physically compatible using the graphics card's included adapter, and would reusing it be reasonably safe, or is a newer power supply strongly recommended?

The bigger question is the power supply’s age and condition. ATX 3.0/3.1 units are designed to handle the brief power spikes newer GPUs can produce, while an older unit like the AX860i wasn’t certified for those requirements. A high-quality 860W unit may work perfectly, but it could also shut down under a transient spike, especially if it’s been running for many years.

Yes, it should be physically usable. The AX860i has enough wattage and multiple PCIe 6+2-pin cables, so you can connect the RTX 5080’s included adapter using the required separate PCIe cables. Don’t use a single cable with multiple plugs for the whole adapter if the instructions call for separate cables.

The RTX 5080’s wattage recommendation is within the AX860i’s capacity, so this isn’t an immediate wattage problem. Just make sure every connector is fully seated, use only genuine cables made for that exact Corsair model, and don’t mix modular cables from another power supply.
