How Can I Manage Stolen Device Protection for iPhone Repairs Without Customer Face Access?

I run a small repair shop focused on iPhone repairs, particularly screen replacements, but we also assist customers with data transfers or backups to new phones. We've been offering this service for years, but since Apple implemented Stolen Device Protection (SDP) by default, it's become a complex process. Currently, we take apart the phone, attach a temporary screen, battery, and dock, then the customer must return to scan their face to disable SDP. This 1-hour countdown requires the customer to be back in exactly 60 minutes, or we have to start over. This clunky process not only hampers our efficiency but also prevents us from accepting mail-in backup requests. Is there truly no method to disable SDP besides the face scan wait? Are there any developer tools available that could streamline this for us?

I think you're stuck with the current process. I recently had my battery replaced at an Apple Store, and they had me disable Find My iPhone as part of the service. It seems like Apple is pretty strict about this to protect users. Hopefully, they find a way to make it easier in the future!

Unfortunately, there's no way around the face scan requirement. The whole point of Stolen Device Protection is to keep devices secure and prevent unauthorized access. Apple enforces this to ensure that repairs can only happen when the owner confirms it's safe to do so.
