Is a Ryzen 7 5700X or 5800X a good choice for my AM4 setup over the next few years?

I bought an ROG Strix X570-E AM4 motherboard back in 2019, and while it was pricey, I'm determined to stick with the AM4 platform for a while longer without upgrading to AM5 just yet. I'm currently using a Ryzen 5 3600 and I'm considering an upgrade to either the Ryzen 7 5700X or 5800X. My main uses are playing Minecraft and FPS games, along with some workstation tasks like CAD for 3D printing and scanning. With a budget of $300, is one of these CPUs a solid choice for the next few years, or should I wait for AM5?

You made a solid choice with AM4, and it isn't a mistake at all. The high-end CPUs on this platform still deliver excellent performance compared to the latest AM5 options, which might only be around a 15% uplift.

Thanks for the reassurance! That really eases my concerns. <3

The 5700X should work just fine for your needs, but if the price is similar, the 5800X might be worth considering. The AM4 platform is still really strong, so there's no rush to move to AM5.

You should be good with either CPU. Just remember, the relevant performance can depend on how long you're planning to keep your system running, but for now, AM4 will serve you well!

For higher resolutions like 1440p and 4K, both CPUs will certainly hold up well. Just make sure to pair them with a decent GPU to really maximize performance.

4K gaming is a bit unclear for me right now, still figuring out the GPU situation!

If you can find a Ryzen 7 5800X3D within your budget, that could be an awesome choice to keep your system relevant. Otherwise, both the 5700X and 5800X will perform well for gaming and workstation tasks.

I’m saving up for more RAM, so something like that might mesh well with my plans.

Same here, I'm currently at 16GB, feeling a bit cramped!
