Was I Wrong to Get Upset Over My Technical Assessment?

I recently completed a technical assessment for a job I applied for. They provided me with basic art assets and no art direction. The task was pretty straightforward: create an application that performs certain functions, explain any use of AI, and keep it simple. I had 7 days to finish it. I met all the technical requirements, used their art, and even added some procedural animation for extra flair. Their feedback was that they appreciated my technical skills, documentation, and structure, but they wanted a result that was more visually polished. I found it frustrating since I received minimal guidance on the art. Am I wrong to be upset about this?

Sounds like they were expecting you to wear too many hats without giving clear guidelines. If they want someone to do design work while focusing on technical tasks, they're probably not investing in their team. Trust me, you might have avoided a tricky work situation by not getting that job.

Grading your design without any direction is just unfair. It's like setting you up for failure. For real, if they were looking for something polished, they needed to say that up front. Expecting you to guess their expectations while advising you to keep it simple is just poor hiring practice.

Exactly! It’s like they want you to read their minds. If they wanted creative flair, they should have given more specific guidelines or at least some references. That's just setting someone up to fail.

You've got every right to be annoyed! I've been in similar situations where these "technical tasks" waste time. They should have been clearer about their expectations. If they wanted creativity, they should have communicated that from the start. Getting feedback that you didn't meet their standards when they gave you no design direction? That's poor communication on their part. Honestly, it feels like you dodged a bullet with this company!

I get where you’re coming from, but have you thought about posting your app? If it showcases your skills well, it might ease some of your frustration. But if it didn’t turn out great, maybe there's some truth to their feedback. Just remember, delivering the minimum isn’t always enough when everyone else might have gone the extra mile.
