Hey everyone! I'm looking to upgrade my CPU from a Ryzen 5 2600, which I currently cool with a stock cooler, to a Ryzen 9 3900X. Here's my setup: 32GB of DDR4 RAM (4x8GB) running at 3000 MHz, a GTX 1660 graphics card, and a 450W PSU. I'm curious if the MSI B450 Tomahawk motherboard will support the Ryzen 9 with a BIOS update and whether my 450W PSU will be sufficient for this upgrade. I'm also wondering if the stock cooler will be adequate or if I should invest in an aftermarket cooler. Do you think there will be any issues with VRMs, thermals, or RAM stability given my setup? Lastly, is it even worth upgrading to a 3900X considering that I have a GTX 1660? Would I be bottlenecked by the GPU? I mainly use my rig for gaming, Photoshop, and Illustrator.

According to the MSI site, the B450 Tomahawk supports the 3900X with a BIOS update! If you're getting a good deal on the CPU, go for it, but you should definitely consider a tower cooler since you're moving from 65W to 105W.

Your stock cooler probably won't handle the Ryzen 9 well, and honestly, unless your current CPU is malfunctioning, the performance gain might not justify the upgrade to the 3900X. If you're still on the fence, maybe grab a 3600X for a better balance between cost and performance.
