What are the Alternatives for Servicing Windows 11 Images Now?

I'm currently trying to integrate our Windows 11 image into our servicing process for deployment. Initially, I attempted to use the built-in servicing feature in Configuration Manager, but I encountered an error: "Failed to apply one or more updates". Next, I tried manually mounting the .wim file with DISM, but I received this error: "An error occurred applying the Unattend.xml file from the .msu package. Error: 0x800f0838". I found some info suggesting that offline servicing might not be an option anymore, which leads me to wonder—what is everyone else doing to service Windows 11 images for on-prem deployments?

I've found that WDS is still hanging around, but it's not really what it used to be. It gets the job done, but you might encounter some limitations.

I ran into the same issue with the latest 24H2 update. DISM on Server 2016 just wouldn’t work, and everything I tried failed. After some trial and error, I discovered that certain images might need an updated version of DISM to function correctly. I eventually transferred my .wim file to a Windows 11 23H2 setup and used the newer DISM version, which finally worked for me. Keep an eye on the version you're using—it can make all the difference!

Haha, I just use TPM emulation in my testing. Makes the whole thing way simpler!

Honestly, I stopped doing offline servicing a while ago when Microsoft started releasing those monthly patched ISOs. The whole process became too cumbersome and it just wasn't worth it. Now I usually extract the install.wim and update my task sequences with a fresh one every month instead.

So you're just pulling the updated install.wim each month? Sounds like a solid approach!

Exactly! It saves a lot of hassle and keeps things more streamlined.
