Evaluating M365 Backup Solutions for Large Data Volumes

After two years of internal discussions, I've finally secured a budget for a robust M365 backup solution. Our setup is quite extensive, comprising about 140TB across Exchange and OneDrive, and an additional 8TB for SharePoint. A significant chunk of this data is stored in OneDrive Plan 2 accounts as 'cold storage' for media. I've been exploring various options like Veeam, AFI.ai, and AvePoint. Currently, AvePoint is leading due to its pricing model, which charges based on licenses per object rather than data size, costing approximately £3.30 per object for a total of around £1,089 monthly. However, I'm not impressed with AvePoint's restore experience since it often necessitates downloading and re-uploading data. I found AFI.ai's product better for restores, but its data-based pricing is prohibitive. I'm looking for recommendations for similar solutions that handle large datasets effectively and provide a more user-friendly restore process. I'm also curious if others have had to deal with this download/re-upload scenario at this scale or if there are alternatives for managing restores more efficiently.

Have you thought about Microsoft's own backup solutions? They might not be the cheapest for your capacity, but they can be quite comprehensive. Just verify that it makes sense financially for what you're backing up.

Yeah, I did some quick math, and it looks too pricey for the amount of data I've got.

Another option is Cohesity, which has a Cloud Services Backup-as-a-Service. They offer flexible user license packages that can fit your needs, and you won't have to deal with the local restore hassle. There’s a free trial available too, which is a nice way to test it out!

N-able Cove could also be a viable option. They back directly to the cloud and have improved their restore performance significantly. My team switched to them and we've had a much smoother experience compared to other services.

I’m actually testing N-able right now on a trial! Hoping the restore process lives up to the hype.

You might consider looking into Acronis CyberProtect. They offer unlimited size options on seats, which could be more scalable for you. I've heard decent feedback on their restore capabilities too, so it might be worth checking out!

What’s the experience been like on restores with Acronis? I've read mixed reviews and am a bit hesitant.

Seriously, consider moving that cold media storage out of OneDrive. A Synology NAS could work well for your needs and help you cut down on backup size! It even has a dedicated app for M365 that could streamline your process.

That’s a great suggestion! I think going local could save us a lot of headaches.
