How can I set programs to open on a specific monitor using a dual monitor setup?

I've just set up a dual monitor system and I'm struggling with getting programs to open on the monitor I want. Whenever I launch an app from my taskbar or a desktop shortcut, it tends to open on the last monitor where I had it, and sometimes that's the wrong one. This isn't a big issue, but it would really improve my workflow. Any tips or tricks would be appreciated!

What version of Windows are you using? I think Windows 11 handles this better by default compared to older versions. From my experience with Windows 10, you generally needed a third-party program to achieve that functionality.

Have you checked out Fancy Zones from Microsoft's PowerToys? It's fantastic for managing windows across multiple monitors. Definitely worth a look!

PowerToys is a game changer, for real!

Unfortunately, I’m not an expert on this, but I do know that you can quickly switch a window to the other monitor using Windows + Shift + Right/Left arrow. It’s a nifty shortcut that might help you out!

That actually sounds super helpful, thanks!

I'm not sure how Windows handles it, but I recently tested it out on my Linux Mint setup, and programs remember their last screen location. It likely has to do with some configuration files. Just a thought!

If you're on Windows 11, the good news is that if you close an app in windowed mode, it usually remembers which monitor it was last on when you reopen it. It should work in full screen too, at least for some applications like games. It's pretty convenient!

That’s neat! I’ve noticed that with my Steam games. They always pop back on the right monitor.
