Should I Choose a 6700XT for My New 4K 120Hz TV or Go for a 2080 Ti/3070?

I recently bought a Panasonic 4K OLED TV that supports 120Hz and AMD FreeSync. Right now, I'm using a GTX 1660 Ti with a 4K 60Hz monitor, where I can hit around 120 frames per second with lower settings, but my GPU temperature is often near 70°C. I have an i7 9th gen processor, NVMe storage, and liquid cooling, so performance shouldn't be a big issue.

I'm thinking of using a DP to HDMI adapter to achieve 120Hz, and I plan to upgrade my GPU, maybe to use my current card in another build later. I mostly play Fortnite and prioritize story and music in games over fancy graphics. I'm also going to use this computer for audio editing and movies. Should I go with the 6700XT since it offers a good thermal design, or is the 2080 Ti or 3070 a better option?

I'd recommend going with the 2080 Ti from those options, honestly. The 3070 could be a good choice too if you're concerned about future-proofing with driver updates since the 20 series is the oldest still receiving support. Just keep in mind that support for the 6700 XT might be lacking since it’s not getting driver updates anymore. In general, I’d avoid it unless you're really tight on budget.

The 16 series still gets updates too, so that’s something to consider!

Both AMD and NVIDIA have FreeSync support now, so your 1660 Ti might just not have it enabled in the settings. Personally, I'd lean towards the 6700 XT if you're working with Linux since it handles graphics quite well there. On Windows, the 3070 tends to perform better overall, especially in gaming, but for Fortnite, VRAM isn't as crucial. I’d caution against the 2080 Ti unless it’s a significant steal; used cards can be risky for mining damage, and performance-wise, it's on par with the 3070.

I heard older Nvidia cards really only support FreeSync over DisplayPort. HDMI 2.1 started with the 30 series, so that's likely why it’s a bit tricky.

The 6700 XT looks like a good deal for me, especially since your dealer offers a warranty on it and the others too. I haven’t tested the TV with my PC yet while I’m setting up my studio, but knowing that Nvidia supports FreeSync is interesting.

Avoid the 3070; it only has 8GB of VRAM, which might be limiting for newer games down the line. Just thought you should keep that in mind!

I've read the same thing. It’s definitely something to think about for future-proofing!
