How Can I Tell if My Laptop’s Motherboard Supports M.2 or NVMe SSDs?

I'm trying to figure out if my laptop's motherboard (MS-158N) supports M.2 SSDs or NVMe SSDs. I recently installed a new M.2 SSD, but it's not showing up in the disk manager. Could this mean that my motherboard doesn't support M.2 SSDs, or is there a chance the SSD itself is faulty?

Before diving into compatibility issues, make sure to check the actual model of the NVMe you installed. Your motherboard should have an M.2 slot that works with PCIe Gen 4 drives, but it’s a good idea to verify that in the manual. Most likely, you should be using an M-Key SSD for best performance since that's what's optimized for NVMe.

Yeah, I totally agree. Always good to double-check the specs!

Also, remember that not all M.2 drives are the same, so make sure yours fits the board's specs.

Have you confirmed that your SSD is compatible with your laptop? There are different sizes and speeds, so verifying that could save you a lot of hassle.

Make sure your SSD is fully seated in the slot. It's surprisingly easy to get it half-seated or at an angle. Push it straight in; a little wiggle as you push can help ensure it's connected properly.

Also, check if your BIOS has the M.2 slot enabled. Sometimes you need to switch it on manually for it to recognize the new hardware.

Good point! I had to enable mine too when I upgraded.

Yeah, and if the drive still isn’t showing, it might be worth trying a different SSD to see if the one you have is the issue.

Just to recap, if you have an M.2 slot on your motherboard, it should support M.2 SSDs. But the specific SSD you got matters too; not all are created equal.
