Hey everyone! I need some serious help before I lose my mind and take my PC in for repairs or go for a full Windows reinstall. I recently got my hands on an RTX 5080, and I was super excited to upgrade from my old 4070 Super. After installing the new card, my computer started freezing for about 30 seconds every five minutes, and it's been running really slow and glitchy overall. I tried using DDU to uninstall the old drivers properly, but things only got worse after reinstalling them – now I'm even having audio problems! I've made sure to update everything I could think of, but every time I restart, it just deteriorates more. I've tried reseating everything and checking connections. I do have an extension cable for the GPU power for aesthetics, but I even tried without that. I'm starting to wonder if the riser cable I'm using might be the culprit since I'm in a Hyte Y60 case, and that's the only option I have, even though it's PCIe 4.0.
Here's my setup:
- CPU: I7-12700KF
- GPU: PNY RTX 5080 OC
- MOBO: B760 AORUS ELITE AX
- PSU: Dark Flash 850W Gold Rated
- RAM: T-Create 32GB DDR5 (5600MHz)
- Case: Hyte Y60
- Storage: 1TB SSD for Windows + 2TB SSD for additional storage.
Any insights or advice would be hugely appreciated – I've been at this for hours, and I'm just exhausted. Thanks in advance!

I don't think the riser cable is the problem since freezing usually points to CPU issues. Have you tried booting your PC with the old 4070 just to see if the 5080 is really the issue? I've heard of a few people having power supply problems with the 5080 too, so it might be worth trying a different PSU or testing the 5080 in another system. Just keep an eye out, I've heard some weird stuff about the 50 series GPUs causing issues too, but not from my personal experience since my 5080 is working fine. Windows can also be tricky with driver conflicts, so don’t rule that out either.
So I checked out that other PSU, and it's a non-modular one without three PCIe connectors. Honestly, it sounds like it could be failing, especially since I noticed a weird smell when I first opened it.
Good call about isolating the issue! I have a spare PSU I can try out and then might swap the 4070 back in after. Thanks for the tip!
Which brand is your 5080? I had my doubts about the PNY version but wasn't sure if it was worth spending extra on another brand.
