I have a spare monitor and would like to use it to loop downloaded shows such as Adventure Time and MTV Downtown. The monitor doesn't have built-in media playback, and I'd prefer a simple setup that works without Wi‑Fi, subscriptions, a laptop, or a phone. Would a streaming stick, USB media player, small computer, or another inexpensive device work best?

A Raspberry Pi running Kodi is another option, although it takes more setup than a plug-and-play media player. If you want the least hassle, look for a cheap HDMI media player with USB storage support and a repeat or playlist mode.
An old laptop or desktop with HDMI is probably the cheapest solution if you already have one. You could also install a lightweight Linux setup and use it purely as an offline video player, with no internet connection needed.
A streaming stick like a Roku or Fire TV usually isn’t ideal here because it’s designed around internet services and may require Wi‑Fi. A basic offline media player, an older Android box, or a small computer connected by HDMI would be a better fit.
Some Blu-ray players and older standalone media players can play video directly from a USB drive. Used devices such as older WDTV, Boxee, or similar players can be inexpensive, but make sure the supported formats match your files, especially if they use newer codecs like H.265.
