How can I remove leftover company web restrictions from a laptop I was allowed to keep?

My division was shut down, and the company told employees we could keep our laptops. IT supposedly removed the company controls, but I still get privacy errors and content-filtering block pages when visiting sites such as eBay and Craigslist. I'm no longer trying to bypass an active workplace network; I want to know the proper way to remove any remaining management or filtering from the computer.

Installing a different operating system can eliminate Windows-based filtering tools, but it should be treated as a clean rebuild, not a workaround for active company controls. If management enrollment remains, contact the company because only its administrators may be able to remove that registration.

First check whether the problem happens on your home network or another unrestricted connection. If it only happens on the company network, the filtering is probably network-based. If it follows the laptop everywhere, look for leftover security or filtering software such as an enterprise proxy client, and ask the former employer to remove it rather than trying to circumvent it.

A full wipe and fresh operating-system installation is usually the practical fix, provided the laptop isn’t BIOS-locked or still enrolled in mobile-device management. Back up anything you own first, confirm you have a valid license and recovery media, and make sure IT has formally transferred or released the device.

The cleanest approach is to have IT confirm that the laptop was fully released from the company’s device-management system, then use the manufacturer’s recovery tools to perform a complete factory reset. Reinstalling the operating system afterward can also help, but it won’t remove cloud-based management if the device serial number is still registered.
