I work in technical support and recently handled a strange cable-TV problem. One particular channel developed increasingly poor picture and eventually degraded audio at roughly the same time every day, and the problem affected all of the customer's set-top boxes. I had the customer tighten the coax connection, and when I called back during the usual trouble period, the channel was working normally. How could a loose coax connection affect only one channel and only at a particular time of day?

Cable systems carry different channels on different radio-frequency bands. A bad connector can cause more loss at some frequencies than others, so one channel may fall below the receiver's usable signal level while the rest continue working. The connector can also create an impedance mismatch, causing reflections and standing-wave effects that interfere more strongly with a particular frequency.

The time-of-day pattern could also come from temperature, humidity, or mechanical changes. Metal expands and contracts, cables can vibrate, and environmental conditions can alter a marginal connection just enough to push the signal past the receiver's correction limit. A connector that is barely making good contact may work most of the day and fail during a predictable period.

It probably isn't that the system is assigning less power to that one channel. More likely, that channel happens to occupy a frequency where the damaged connection has especially high loss, reflections, or interference. The tuner and error correction can compensate for a lot, but tightening the connector may have moved the signal back within the safe operating margin.

A loose or poorly fitted connector can let outside radio signals leak into the cable system.
