I found an old 3TB hard drive that had been unused for quite a while and checked its SMART status after reconnecting it. The results show a large number of reallocated sectors, along with pending and uncorrectable sectors, so the drive clearly has some physical deterioration. Is there any realistic way to repair or stabilize it, or should I consider it finished? I was thinking about using it for replaceable files such as movies, music, or temporary downloads, with the understanding that anything stored there could disappear. Would that be reasonably safe for the rest of the system, or is the drive too unreliable to bother using?

The SMART readings indicate that the drive is already failing. Hundreds of reallocated sectors plus pending and uncorrectable sectors mean the surface has developed damaged areas, and the problem may continue getting worse. There is no practical repair that will make it trustworthy again. If it contains anything important, copy it elsewhere immediately and replace the drive.
If you have no reason to keep testing it, replacement is the sensible option. Once it is retired, you can recycle it properly or take it apart for the magnets and platters, but formatting or running a repair utility will not reverse the underlying physical wear.
I would retire it instead of relying on it, even for junk storage. The uncorrectable sectors suggest that some data has already been lost, while the pending sectors can cause read errors, freezes, and failed writes. Predictions like 'it has a few months left' are not reliable—a drive in this condition could keep working for a while or fail on the next access.
You can technically use it for files you genuinely do not care about losing, such as a temporary media library or disposable downloads. It should not damage the rest of the computer just because it fails, but it could stop responding, become extremely slow, or disappear without warning. Treat it as an experiment rather than usable storage, and never keep the only copy of anything on it.

That makes sense. I would only try it if I had a replacement ready and nothing important depended on it.
