Which Build Is Better for 1440p Gaming Over the Next 5–7 Years?

I'm planning a gaming PC that I'd like to keep for at least five years, possibly seven, and I'm deciding between two similarly priced builds.

Build 1 uses a Ryzen 5 9600X, RTX 3090 24GB, 32GB DDR5, a B650 motherboard, an 850W Gold power supply, and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD.

Build 2 uses a Ryzen 7 5800X3D, RX 9070 XT 16GB, 32GB DDR4, a B550 motherboard, an 850W Gold power supply, and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD.

The RX 9070 XT is newer, faster in many modern games, and more power-efficient, while the RTX 3090 has 24GB of VRAM that could be useful as games become more demanding. The Ryzen 5 9600X also gives Build 1 access to the newer AM5 platform, whereas the 5800X3D is the end of the AM4 upgrade path.

I'm comfortable lowering settings or using upscaling in future games. My main goal is reliable 1440p gaming over the next five to seven years. Which build would you choose, and why?

Build 1 is the safer long-term platform choice, but I’d question the RTX 3090 specifically. It has plenty of VRAM, yet it is an older, power-hungry card and may not maintain strong frame rates in future games even when settings are reduced. If you can use the AM5 build with a newer GPU around the same budget, that would be preferable. Between the exact two options, choose Build 1 for the upgrade path or Build 2 if the 9070 XT’s current gaming performance matters more and you do not plan to upgrade the CPU.

If you’re buying a new motherboard and memory rather than reusing AM4 parts, I would avoid building around the 5800X3D. It is still capable, but AM4 has no meaningful future upgrade path. The Ryzen 5 9600X is a newer platform with faster newer-generation CPUs available later, so Build 1 gives you a better way to extend the system without replacing the motherboard and RAM.

The 5800X3D can still be excellent for gaming, especially if you already own an AM4 board, but starting a new build on AM4 makes less sense.
