I want to try Linux on my Lenovo LOQ without changing my Windows installation. The laptop has a Ryzen 7 7445HS, RTX 3050 with 4 GB of VRAM, 24 GB of RAM, and a 512 GB internal SSD running Windows. I was considering installing Linux on a 128 GB SanDisk Ultra USB 3.0 drive so that Linux would boot when the drive is connected and Windows would start normally when it is unplugged.
My priorities are good performance from the external drive, a beginner-friendly system for learning Linux and coding, potentially better battery life than Windows while browsing or programming, and a customizable desktop environment. Windows would remain my main system for gaming and media, while Linux would mainly be used for coding, experimenting, and performance benchmarking.
Which distribution would you recommend? For this use case, is a full installation better than a persistent live USB? Are there any important precautions or alternatives I should know about?

A full Linux installation is preferable to persistence on a live USB, but that particular flash drive is a poor choice for running an operating system. USB flash drives usually have weak random read/write performance, limited endurance, and can become hot or stutter under sustained use. It may work for testing, but the experience will likely be frustrating and the drive could wear out quickly.
If you want Linux on an external device, use a real SSD in a USB 3.2, USB4, or Thunderbolt enclosure. A thermal pad in the enclosure is useful. You would also need a second USB drive to hold the installer. A persistent live system is mainly intended for saving a small amount of configuration and files, not as a daily operating system.
For a beginner, Fedora KDE Plasma, Linux Mint, or Zorin OS would all be reasonable starting points. KDE gives you lots of desktop customization, while Mint and Zorin are especially approachable for someone coming from Windows. Fedora KDE is also a good way to learn a modern Linux environment without immediately needing an especially complex setup.
You can create a regular live installer and boot it in “try” mode before installing. That lets you check Wi-Fi, audio, suspend, display brightness, the NVIDIA GPU, and external monitors. A live session will be slower from the flash drive, but it is useful for compatibility testing.
An Arch-based option can also work if you enjoy tweaking, but it may involve more troubleshooting. I would start with Mint, Fedora KDE, or Zorin and explore other distributions later.
Do not expect automatically better battery life than Windows, especially with an RTX laptop. Linux can match or sometimes improve battery life, but getting there may require configuring the integrated/discrete GPU behavior, power profiles, CPU scaling, and NVIDIA drivers. Battery results depend heavily on firmware, the desktop environment, and whether the discrete GPU stays active.
For your stated goals, Linux is a good learning and coding platform, but keep Windows available for games that rely on kernel-level anti-cheat or have poor Linux support. Back up important files before changing partitions, and avoid running an operating system from the 128 GB flash drive as anything more than a short-term experiment.

That makes sense. I may use the flash drive only to test Linux for now and buy an external SSD later if I decide to keep using it. I mainly want to learn the basics without committing to a permanent installation.
