I'm working with a client as an outsourced consultant, building programs and automating workflows for their business. We originally agreed on an hourly rate, but the workload has grown and they now want a different billing structure. They suggested either a monthly retainer or a fixed price per project. I'm concerned that a retainer could leave me underpaid during especially busy periods, while project pricing could leave me earning very little during slower weeks or months. What billing arrangement is typical for this kind of consulting work, and how should I set a fair rate for a company based in the EU? My current rate is $14 per hour, and this is only my second professional job.

For work that keeps changing and includes ongoing revisions, hourly billing is usually the safest option. A fixed project price can become difficult when the client keeps adding requirements or requesting changes after delivery. You could offer a blended structure instead: keep an hourly rate, agree on a minimum number of hours each month, and set a clear limit or approval process for additional work.
A retainer can work well if it guarantees a set number of hours and clearly states what happens when you exceed that amount. For example, the client could pay for a fixed block of hours each month, with extra work billed separately. Avoid an unlimited-work retainer unless the fee is high enough to cover your busiest periods. Also be careful with sensitive or personally identifiable data when using external AI or automation tools; confirm what the client permits and what security requirements apply.

The country, your technical skills, the type of automation, the client’s industry, whether you are responsible for maintenance, and how much communication or project management is involved all affect the rate.
