I'm not a systems administrator, but I've been asked to help my sysadmin with Qualys Patch Management. I've completed some of Qualys's free training and want to show up prepared. What practical tips, limitations, or common issues should I understand beforehand? We use VMDR alongside Patch Management, and we may also need to investigate duplicate server records after moving workloads from on-premises infrastructure to AWS.

Qualys started as a vulnerability scanner, so Patch Management is built around that foundation rather than being a dedicated software-deployment platform. Its biggest advantage is the detection-to-remediation workflow: VMDR identifies a vulnerability and Patch Management can help address it in the same system. The areas that usually require more hands-on work are third-party application coverage, deployment reliability, asset accuracy, and troubleshooting failed jobs. I’d learn how your organization uses asset tags, vulnerability queries, remediation jobs, reboot settings, and reporting. If you work with QQL, start by understanding the asset and vulnerability data model, then build and test simple queries before combining conditions.
Some teams find Qualys Patch Management too limited for their needs and move endpoint patching to a dedicated tool while using a separate approach for servers. The important thing is to compare coverage and reliability by platform: Windows endpoints, third-party applications, Linux systems, and cloud or on-premises servers may all behave differently. Before changing anything, review patch success rates, missing check-ins, duplicate assets, maintenance windows, reboot behavior, and how exceptions are documented.
Qualys handles basic Windows updates and some third-party application patching, but its deployment features can feel limited compared with tools designed specifically for patch management. We mainly used it as a supplement for laptops that rarely connected to the VPN. Pay close attention to which assets are checking in, how they’re grouped, and whether duplicate records are inflating your scope.
That’s helpful. The move from on-premises systems to AWS does seem to have created duplicate server records, so cleaning those up will probably be one of my first tasks.
We do use VMDR and Patch Management together, so that integrated workflow is a useful strength to focus on. Deployment reliability appears to be one of our current pain points, and I’ll also look into the duplicate AWS server records.
