I've been working in Tier 1 helpdesk for about eight months after completing an IT course. My company provides IT services to many different organizations, so I've already had exposure to Windows Server, various server roles, Microsoft 365 administration, and several email systems. I enjoy the variety, but I want to build deeper skills and eventually move toward systems administration. What should I learn first, and which online courses or training resources would be worthwhile?

Ask management to include you in deployments, upgrades, maintenance windows, and other infrastructure projects. Those give you supervised, practical experience while showing that you’re motivated to grow. Be careful not to take on responsibilities beyond your current training, though—learn gradually and make sure you understand the environment before changing production systems.
Start by asking the administrators or engineers you escalate tickets to whether you can shadow them or help with small tasks. Also build a home lab—ideally with virtualization—so you can practice deploying systems, changing configurations, troubleshooting failures, and taking snapshots before risky changes. Begin with the basics, then expand the lab toward whichever areas interest you most.
Look for an unpopular or neglected responsibility at work and become highly reliable at it. That might be maintaining an older application, handling a difficult customer environment, or helping with a DNS or migration project. Document what you do so you don’t get permanently stuck with the task, and make sure people on the teams you want to join see the quality of your work. Internal projects and opportunities are often more valuable than collecting random courses.
Don’t feel pressured to master everything after only eight months. Strengthen your fundamentals by understanding why recurring fixes work, then learn PowerShell so you can automate common tasks and investigate systems more effectively. A course is most useful when it supports a specific goal, such as a certification or role you’ve decided to pursue.
