I've been learning more about privacy, software ownership, and computers, and I'm considering switching my laptop from Windows to Linux. I'm not especially technical, although I know the basics and I'm willing to learn.
I mainly use the laptop for web browsing, downloading and transferring books and articles to my e-reader, listening to podcasts, and writing. I also play a few fairly lightweight games through Steam, but I'm not a serious gamer. I don't currently need the laptop for work or school, though I may return to school later and would need to make sure the required software works.
Would Linux be a practical choice for this kind of use? Linux Mint seems like the obvious beginner-friendly option, but I'm open to other suggestions. I'd also like to know what I should check before replacing Windows.

Mint is a reasonable starting point, particularly the Cinnamon edition, which tends to feel familiar to people coming from Windows. You could also try Zorin OS if you want an especially Windows-like desktop. Both can be tested in a live USB environment before you commit.
A live session lets you explore the desktop and check your hardware without deleting Windows. Make a backup first, and avoid advanced or immutable distributions until you have more experience. If you want an extra safety net, dual-booting is another option, though it adds some setup and maintenance.
Linux can absolutely work for you, but it isn’t always as hands-off as Windows. Common hardware is usually fine, while unusual peripherals or manufacturer-specific control software may require research or may not work at all. The same applies to specialized writing programs, e-reader tools, and hardware-monitoring utilities.
The important question is whether you’re comfortable occasionally troubleshooting something or finding a replacement application. For basic everyday tasks, you may barely notice the difference, but it’s worth checking your essential software before switching completely.
