Multiple USB mice stopped working after a Windows 11 restart

My friend's mouse stopped working after he shut down and restarted his PC. We tried several different mice, and none were recognized through any of the USB ports. It seemed like a possible USB or driver problem, but the issue was ultimately fixed by installing the pending Windows updates.

If you need to navigate Windows without a mouse, enable Mouse Keys so the numeric keypad can control the pointer. You can also check Device Manager for USB errors or boot from a Windows installation drive to determine whether the issue is specific to the installed operating system.

Try a full power drain first: shut the computer down, unplug it, hold the power button for several seconds, then reconnect everything and boot up. If that does not help, check whether the mouse works in the BIOS. If it does, the problem is probably within Windows or its USB drivers.

The simplest fix turned out to be updating Windows. After the pending PC updates were installed and the system restarted, the mice worked normally again.
