I'm putting together a PC for full-time trading, running my own business, and possibly handling my brother's university work. I already have a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and a Radeon RX 9070 XT. I'll also game occasionally at 1440p. I'm unsure about the practical differences between AMD B850 and X870 motherboards, especially since both are currently available in bundle deals. I'm willing to spend more if there's a worthwhile benefit, but I'd like to avoid paying for features I won't use. I'm planning on roughly 3–5 TB of NVMe storage, possibly using two 2 TB drives, and the build will use a standard ATX case. What motherboard and storage setup would you recommend?

For storage, one 4 TB NVMe drive is usually simpler and can be cheaper than buying two 2 TB drives. It also leaves another M.2 slot available for future expansion. Two drives can still make sense if you want to separate the operating system and work files, or if you want an additional drive for backups, but don’t treat two internal SSDs as a backup by themselves. For important trading and business data, keep a separate external or network backup as well.
The 9800X3D is excellent for gaming, and it will handle trading, office work, and university tasks easily, although the extra 3D cache doesn’t provide much advantage in typical productivity applications. Since you already own the processor and also have a 9070 XT, there’s no problem using this as an all-purpose PC. At 1440p, the graphics card will be the more important gaming component.
For this build, a good B850 motherboard should be more than enough. Just to clarify, B860 is an Intel platform, while B850 is the comparable AMD chipset for your Ryzen 7 9800X3D. X870 mainly adds features such as USB4 and some extra connectivity; it generally won’t improve gaming or normal business workloads. I’d only pay for X870 if you specifically need USB4 or its additional expansion options. Otherwise, put the money toward reliable storage, cooling, or backup hardware. Also, make sure the board has a current BIOS and strong VRM cooling.
That helps clear things up. I assumed a higher-end gaming platform would automatically be better for business tasks too, but I’m mainly interested in choosing a board that works reliably and gives me useful features.

A single 4 TB drive sounds more practical if the price and reliability are good. I’ll also make sure important work files are backed up separately.
