Should I Pursue a Career in DevOps or Stick with My Backup Plan?

Hey everyone! I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed about my future and could really use your input. In a month, I'll be facing my final exams, and the results will influence my career path significantly. In my country, DevOps is the only job that pays well—about 2000 EUR for seniors—besides careers in medicine or highly specialized roles in multinational companies. My potential options include university programs in networking and telecom software, electrical engineering and computers (which combines electrical and computer science), system engineering (more focused on industrial applications), and mechanical engineering (like quality testing for cars using CAD software).

Here's the thing: I'm in a difficult spot because entry-level IT jobs are scarce. Most openings require extensive knowledge, including many expecting juniors to take on senior roles right away. I have a passion for Linux and just started learning Python, which makes me eager to enter the IT field, particularly in development. However, it's intimidating to think about a role where I might need to be a one-person show. I've attempted to get into IT before and felt crushed under the pressure. My backup plan is to pursue mechanical engineering and work for big automotive companies like Ford or BMW, and while that feels more aligned with my interests, it doesn't come close to the earning potential of a DevOps position. I just don't want to waste my time or struggle unnecessarily. Any thoughts on whether I should go for DevOps or stick with mechanics/CAD engineering?

DevOps is definitely a relevant and promising career choice for the future! Just remember, it's evolving to include security too—it's become DevSecOps, which means security is just as crucial. There are lots of paths in this field, whether you start in development, operations, or support, and you can transition through various roles. Just be prepared to adapt your skills as the industry demands them.

Security sounds tough though! I assume you’d need to be on call a lot, right?

While it's smart to consider salary, let your passion guide you too. A lot of young people chase money but feel unfulfilled in their careers. Do what excites you! If you love cars and engineering, lean into that. But if you're drawn to DevOps, embrace it, even if it's challenging. You can find ways to make it work, and it could be worth it financially in the long run.

Totally! It’s important to balance passion with practicality. My background in mechanics has really shaped my perspective, but I know that IT offers a different lifestyle, especially in terms of income.
