I can find a Radeon 7900 XTX 24GB for roughly £500–£800 and am considering it mainly for virtual reality. It seems to offer around 20–30% more performance than a 3090, along with a large VRAM capacity that could help reduce stuttering and let me run high or near-maximum settings. My current RTX 2080 Ti is beginning to show its age in VR. Is the 7900 XTX still a sensible buy compared with newer cards, and what price would make it worthwhile?

For VR specifically, I’d happily choose the 7900 XTX over a 9070 XT or 5070 Ti if the prices are similar. The extra VRAM is useful for high-resolution textures and can help avoid memory-related hitching. Just remember that newer cards may have better upscaling features and efficiency.
With a capable processor, the 7900 XTX still delivers excellent results and should be a huge upgrade from a 2080 Ti. Sixteen gigabytes can be enough for many QHD VR setups, but having 24GB gives you more headroom for demanding games, mods, and future releases. I’d avoid paying the full £800 unless you specifically need the extra VRAM and can’t find a better deal.
It’s a strong card, but the price makes all the difference. Around £500–£550 would be a very good deal; once it gets closer to £650–£700, newer alternatives become more tempting. You’re still getting excellent performance and 24GB of VRAM, though.
The headset resolution itself isn’t extremely high—about 1440×1600 per eye—but VR can use VRAM quickly. My main goal is eliminating stutters and keeping everything visible at high settings, since my 2080 Ti is starting to struggle.
