I'm moving to Japan for a year and need my computer for school and work. It's a full desktop build with a large graphics card, motherboard, and several cooling fans. I'm considering removing the fragile components, packing them between clothes in antistatic material, and buying a new case after I arrive. I'd appreciate advice on which parts should go in checked luggage versus carry-on, how to protect the motherboard and GPU, and whether my existing power supply will work in Japan. Is a simple plug adapter sufficient, or should I buy a Japanese PSU?

Pack the components separately and plan to buy a case after you arrive. Cases are relatively easy to replace, while transporting a fully assembled PC adds unnecessary risk. Keep the motherboard and graphics card in sturdy packaging, preferably their original boxes, and use antistatic bags rather than placing components directly against clothing or bubble wrap.
A practical approach is to remove the GPU and CPU cooler, then pack the remaining components securely in the case inside checked luggage, surrounded by clothes or other soft padding. The GPU is safer in a carry-on, ideally in its original packaging or antistatic protection with padding around it. It worked for me, but if you’re already short on luggage space, selling the case and buying a replacement in Japan is probably safer and easier.
I moved a similar system by leaving behind the case, PSU, desk, and monitors. I packed the RAM, cooler, and accessories in regular luggage, while the motherboard, CPU, and GPU went in my carry-on with antistatic protection, clothing, and bubble wrap. I bought a new case and PSU in Japan, which made setup much less stressful.
Check the label on your PSU before replacing it. Many modern units accept 100–240 V automatically, in which case you may only need the correct plug adapter, but an adapter does not convert voltage. Japan’s outlets and grounding arrangements can differ, so don’t remove the ground connection. Use a properly grounded outlet or surge protector where available, and replace the PSU if it isn’t rated for Japan’s voltage or if dealing with the wiring would be inconvenient.
