I have a very old tablet that has become extremely slow, and I'd like to use it for schoolwork. I already restarted it, but I'm not sure what else I can try to improve its performance. Would a factory reset, removing apps, or installing a lighter version of Android help? If it's simply too outdated, I'm also considering turning it into a cyberdeck or another DIY project.

Start with a backup, then try a factory reset. That can clear out years of accumulated apps, cached data, and background processes. If it’s still slow afterward, the tablet is probably limited by its old processor or lack of RAM, so there may not be much more you can do.
A lightweight custom Android ROM might help if one is available for the exact tablet model. You could also disable unnecessary apps and use a computer with debugging tools to remove some bloatware, but be careful—flashing the wrong software or changing system files can permanently stop the tablet from working.
