I enabled iCloud syncing for the Notes app today so a friend could share a note with me. A few hours later, I discovered that every note I had created since 2023 was missing from my iPhone. They weren't in the Recently Deleted folder, and they didn't appear when I checked Notes through iCloud in a web browser.
I've tried updating iOS and switching Notes syncing off and on again, but nothing has brought them back. I also disabled automatic backups because I'm considering restoring the phone from an older backup, although I'm worried the latest backup may already have been made after the notes disappeared. The missing notes include diary entries, important lists, and stored usernames and passwords. I'm looking for safe recovery steps and want to know whether restoring from an earlier iPhone backup could help without making things worse.

Cloud sync is synchronization, not a separate archival backup. If the service treated an older Notes state as the current one, it may have propagated that state across devices instead of combining every local note. The safest next step is to contact Apple Support and ask them to check account-side recovery options before changing more settings. Keep the phone as-is and avoid repeatedly toggling sync while investigating.
Don’t wipe the phone or restore anything until you’ve checked the dates of your available backups and made a copy of the phone’s current data. If the notes were stored locally, an iPhone backup made before they disappeared might contain them, but restoring an older backup can overwrite newer information. Also check every account listed under Settings > Apps > Notes > Accounts, since notes may have been associated with another mail or cloud account rather than iCloud.
Before erasing or restoring the phone, check whether the notes are hidden under the local account rather than deleted. In Settings, open Apps > Notes and make sure “On My iPhone” Account is enabled. Then return to the Notes folder list and look for a separate “On My iPhone” section alongside iCloud. Enabling iCloud doesn’t automatically move older notes from the local account into iCloud.
I checked, and both accounts are enabled, but the missing notes still aren’t showing up.
That’s what makes this so upsetting—the notes seemed to vanish immediately after syncing, rather than simply failing to upload. I’m going to avoid restoring or erasing anything until support can confirm whether an earlier backup or account snapshot exists.
