Should I Choose AM4 with 32GB DDR4 or AM5 with 16GB DDR5 for a Quiet 1080p Gaming PC?

I haven't built a PC in about 20 years and I'm considering putting together a small, quiet SteamOS gaming system. At my budget, I'm choosing between an AM4 platform with 32GB of DDR4 and an AM5 platform with 16GB of DDR5. I'd like to play games such as Baldur's Gate 3 at high or ultra settings at 1080p, and I'm also interested in VR gaming with the upcoming Steam Frame. Noise reduction and a compact build are important priorities. What performance differences, upgrade options, and tradeoffs should I expect between these two platforms?

For a gaming-only system, 32GB isn’t automatically better than 16GB. SteamOS is fairly efficient with memory, and the CPU and graphics card will have a much larger effect on your frame rate. If you choose AM4, look for a strong gaming chip such as a Ryzen 5700X3D or 5500X3D; on AM5, a Ryzen 7500F or similar processor should be plenty for 1080p gaming.

If you aren’t in a hurry, waiting could be worthwhile. Memory, storage, and graphics-card pricing may improve, and newer CPU and GPU generations could offer a better base for a small living-room system. If you’re building now, though, AM5 is the safer investment because it leaves room for future upgrades.

I’d be cautious about waiting solely for prices to fall. Hardware costs could stay high or even increase, so AM5 makes more sense if you need the PC soon and want an upgrade path.

VR changes the priorities somewhat. A small SteamOS box needs a reasonably powerful graphics card, and the compact case, cooling, and power supply can affect noise more than the choice between DDR4 and DDR5. A compact card such as a Radeon 9060 XT 16GB could be worth considering, paired with a reputable 400–500W SFX power supply. Make sure the case has enough airflow so the fans don’t have to run constantly at high speed.

If you can afford it, AM5 with 16GB of DDR5 is the better long-term choice. You can add more memory or install a faster processor later, while AM4 is effectively a finished platform. For gaming on SteamOS, 16GB can be adequate to start, though 32GB is more comfortable for newer games and multitasking.
