I recently bought a new base-model iPhone 17 after using an iPhone 14 Pro, whose display looked noticeably cleaner. This iPhone 17 has a grainy or slightly rough appearance, especially on light backgrounds and solid colors. I'm not using a screen protector, so the texture seems to come from the panel itself.
I previously had another iPhone 17 that was being used as a demo unit, and its screen looked perfect. After exchanging it for a sealed, brand-new phone, I noticed a clear difference between the two displays. I understand that different panel suppliers may be used, but this screen looks much cheaper than the other unit to me.
Is this kind of panel variation considered normal, or would it be worth taking the phone to an Apple Store and asking for a replacement? I'm in Europe, bought the phone from a retailer rather than directly from Apple, and it has Apple's one-year warranty.

I’d have Apple inspect it while the phone is still new and covered by warranty. A little variation between panels may happen, but if the grain is clearly visible during ordinary use—and especially if another identical phone looked much better—it’s reasonable to ask whether the display is defective. They may test it or offer a replacement, although there’s no guarantee the next unit will have a panel you prefer.
The phone can still be completely genuine even if it uses a different display supplier. New devices may come with panels from different manufacturers, and their uniformity or grain can vary. Since you bought it from a retailer, I’d also check the retailer’s return or exchange period; that may be simpler than relying only on the manufacturer warranty. Compare the phone at the same brightness and lighting conditions, and make sure the issue is visible without any coating or protector affecting the image.
It is genuine—the replacement came sealed—but I learned that this unit uses a panel type known for having a more noticeable grainy appearance. The difference from the demo phone is still obvious to me.
That’s what worries me—I could exchange it and end up with another screen that looks the same, so I’m hesitant to keep playing the panel lottery.
