I've been dealing with problems on my Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti after using it for about two years, so I'm considering an upgrade. My budget is around $1,500, although I'd prefer to spend less if possible. I'm mainly interested in gaming, including VR and newer demanding titles. I'm leaning toward the RTX 5070 Ti because the jump to an RTX 5080 doesn't seem to offer enough extra value, but I'd appreciate a second opinion. My system has an Intel Core i9-14900KF, 32 GB of DDR5 memory, and a Z790 WiFi 7 motherboard. Would the RTX 5070 Ti be a worthwhile upgrade, or should I consider another card?

For your budget, both the RTX 5070 Ti and Radeon RX 9070 XT are worth considering. The 5080 makes more sense only if you’re willing to pay extra for maximum performance and don’t mind adjusting settings occasionally. Otherwise, the 5070 Ti should be a major step up from the 4060 Ti and should handle modern games and VR much better.
The hardware installation is basically the same. Before swapping cards, remove the Nvidia drivers with a driver-cleanup utility, install the 9070 XT, and then install AMD’s current graphics drivers. After that, it should work normally. Nvidia may still be preferable if you rely heavily on CUDA, AI tools, or certain video-editing features.
A 5070 Ti is a sensible upgrade if you want to keep costs under control. The 5080 is faster, but its price premium is hard to justify unless you play at high resolutions, use demanding VR applications, or want to maximize FPS without lowering settings. With a $1,500 budget, you can afford a 5080, but that doesn’t necessarily make it the best value.
The RTX 5070 Ti looks like the better value choice. In 4K Ultra comparisons, it averages roughly 77 FPS versus about 69 FPS for the RTX 5080, while costing around 27% more for the 5080. That makes the 5080 only about 13% faster in that scenario, so the 5070 Ti is probably the smarter buy unless you specifically want the highest possible frame rates.
I’ve also thought about the RX 9070 XT, but I’m unsure whether switching from Nvidia would make installation more complicated. Would I need to change any software?
