My Ryzen 5600X died recently, and I'm trying to decide whether to replace it with another AM4 processor or move to AM5 with a new CPU, motherboard, and DDR5 memory. I could spend up to about $1,000 CAD if necessary, but my current usage is fairly light. I'd also like the system to handle Cyberpunk Orion eventually, although that game is still a long way off. My current system has a Ryzen 5600X, RTX 3060, MSI B550-A Pro motherboard, 32GB of DDR4-3600 memory, and a 650W power supply. Would it make more sense to stay on AM4 for another couple of years? If so, which processors offer the best value? I've been considering the Ryzen 7 5700X3D.

The 5700X3D is a great option if you can find one at a reasonable price, but availability and pricing can be inconsistent. The 5800X3D is another strong drop-in upgrade, though it may be too expensive compared with newer platforms. Some people have also found the 5500X3D through marketplace imports for around $250 CAD, which could be worthwhile if you’re comfortable with that source.
I’d replace the CPU and keep the rest of the platform. You already have 32GB of DDR4, and moving to AM5 means paying for a motherboard and memory upgrade when your current system is still perfectly usable. A Ryzen 7 5700X3D or 5800X3D would give you several more years, and you could put the remaining budget toward a stronger graphics card later.
If the X3D chips are unavailable or overpriced, a Ryzen 7 5800XT could be a reasonable replacement that works with your B550 board, assuming the BIOS supports it. It won’t offer the same gaming boost as an X3D processor, but it would be a straightforward way to get the computer running again without replacing the whole platform.
I recently picked up a 5500X3D for roughly $250 CAD as an upgrade from a Ryzen 5 3600, while keeping 32GB of DDR4. It worked out well for a budget-conscious system.
