I'm looking for an affordable new graphics card to replace a GeForce GTX 1060 in my wife's roughly 10-year-old PC. She mainly plays less demanding games at 1080p, so maximum performance is not the priority. I care more about reasonable longevity and would pay somewhat extra if the card should remain useful for several years.
The system has an MSI Z170-A Pro motherboard, an Intel Core i5-6400, 16 GB of memory, and a 550 W power supply. I do not plan to upgrade the other components soon, although I'd like the graphics card to remain useful if the platform is eventually replaced. I also prefer buying new after having a bad experience with used hardware.
I was considering an RTX 5060, partly because newer features such as frame generation might help extend its useful life. An RTX 4060 does not seem much cheaper where I live, so I'm unsure whether there is any reason to choose it instead. I've only used Nvidia cards, but I'm open to AMD if it offers better value. There is also an even older PC with a GeForce 660 that needs a newer driver for some modern game engines, so improved driver support is another consideration.

A used RTX 3060 12GB, RTX 3060 Ti, or RTX 3070 would generally be a stronger value than buying a low-end new card, and the 3060’s 12GB is useful for longevity. However, since buying used is off the table, I would avoid overspending on a high-end GPU that the current CPU cannot fully use. A future CPU and motherboard upgrade would be needed to justify something substantially faster.
For a new card, something around an RTX 5050 or RTX 3050 6GB is more proportionate to this system. The 3050 6GB uses only about 70 W, needs no extra power connector in many models, supports modern Nvidia features, and should be a modest improvement over the 1060. Its main drawbacks are limited performance and VRAM, so check independent benchmarks before buying—the improvement is not enormous.
If AMD is available at a better price, compare the RX 9060 XT 8GB with the RTX 5060 8GB. They are close in ordinary rendering performance, with the Radeon often slightly faster, so pricing and game-specific features should decide it. The 16GB Radeon version would offer better long-term VRAM headroom, but it is probably excessive for an i5-6400 running games at 1080p.
The biggest limitation here is the i5-6400, not the GTX 1060. At 1080p, a much faster card may simply sit idle while the CPU limits performance. Spending RTX 5060 money probably will not provide much benefit until the rest of the platform is upgraded. Make sure the card’s power requirements and connectors are suitable for the 550 W supply.
The newer drivers and game engines can put more pressure on an older CPU, so an eventual platform upgrade may matter more than buying a powerful graphics card now. If you can find one cheaply, a Core i7-6700 would fit the existing board and add threads, but it is still an old platform and should not be treated as a long-term replacement for a modern system.
