Is this $549 AM5 CPU, motherboard, RAM, and AIO bundle a good budget upgrade?

I'm considering building a new AM5 system and found an online bundle with a Ryzen 5 9600X, a B850 motherboard, 16GB of RAM, and a Cooler Master Elite AIO included for about $549. I'm working with a fairly limited budget, so I'm trying to decide whether AM5 is worth the extra cost compared with putting together a strong AM4 system. My main concern is longevity: I know "future-proofing" is difficult, but I'd prefer a platform that won't feel outdated after only a few years. Is this bundle a reasonable starting point, or would I be better off with a cheaper alternative?

The memory configuration would give me pause. If the bundle uses 2x8GB, upgrading later may mean replacing the kit rather than simply adding another stick. A bundle with one 16GB module could make expansion easier, although two matched sticks are generally better for performance right now.

The RAM is my biggest concern too, but memory prices are already high, and these bundles seem to be limited to 2x8GB kits.

AM4 can still be fast, but the savings may not be as large as expected once you price in a good CPU, motherboard, cooler, and RAM. An AM4 build with a high-end gaming chip can end up close to the cost of this bundle while offering less upgrade potential. A cheaper Intel DDR4 setup could save more money, but its socket also has limited upgrade prospects, so AM5 is the better long-term starting point if the price fits your budget.

That’s helpful. I hadn’t compared the complete AM4 cost closely, and the savings don’t seem dramatic once everything is included. The weaker upgrade path makes the AM5 bundle more appealing.

If you’re buying a motherboard and memory from scratch, I’d choose AM5 over AM4. AM4 has reached the end of its meaningful CPU upgrade path, while AM5 should still let you move to a faster processor later. That isn’t true future-proofing, but it gives you more flexibility than investing in an older socket.

For roughly $549, the bundle seems reasonable, especially since it includes the CPU, motherboard, memory, and an AIO cooler. The main drawback is the 16GB of RAM. That’s usable today, but 32GB would be a much more comfortable target for a new gaming system if you can fit it into the budget.
