I built my first gaming PC, but it does not boot into a display. The case fans, CPU cooler fans, and motherboard lighting all turn on, yet the graphics card fans remain still and there is no HDMI signal. I could not fit the graphics card into the top PCIe slot, so it is currently installed in the lower slot. The GPU power cable is connected, and the motherboard lights appear to be decorative RGB rather than error indicators. What should I check to figure out whether the graphics card, PCIe slot, or something else is causing the problem?

Graphics card fans not spinning does not necessarily mean the card is defective; many cards keep their fans off until they reach a certain temperature. For the no-signal problem, power the system down, reseat the RAM and GPU, verify every motherboard and CPU power connector, and make sure the monitor is set to the correct HDMI input. The exact motherboard, CPU, GPU, and power supply models would help identify the next step.
The lower PCIe slot may still work, but the top full-length slot is normally the preferred one and is often connected directly to the CPU. Try to determine why the card will not fit there—sometimes a case bracket, motherboard shield, or incorrect alignment is the issue. Do not force it. If possible, test the card in the upper slot after correcting the alignment, or try another known-good graphics card to narrow down the fault.
First, check the graphics card’s power connector and make sure it is fully seated without the cable pulling sideways on it. Reseat the card as well. The motherboard’s diagnostic LEDs, if it has them, are different from normal RGB lighting, so look for labels such as CPU, DRAM, VGA, or BOOT and check the manual if one stays lit. Also confirm the monitor is connected to the graphics card rather than the motherboard video output.
The GPU power cable is connected, and the lights I can see on the motherboard seem to be ordinary RGB lighting. I’ll check for labeled diagnostic indicators.

A graphics card can usually display from another compatible slot, but it may run with reduced bandwidth. The lower slot alone does not automatically explain the missing signal.
